Fall Color Tour In Leelanau County is Official*

*The trees are changing colors, the sun is shining, and leaves are on the ground!

Peak Season for Leelanau County is expected to be the second week in October (next week).

View good yellows in aspens and cottonwoods
View reds maples, sumacs, and Northern Oak

The leaf-peepers are out and about and these are just a few of the quotes from notable and public sources:

"I think it's going to be a really good year for colors." -- Daniel Schillinger, forester with the Leelanau County Conservation District,.

"Normal color season predicted." -- National Weather Service

"Colors will be especially sharp, and will be ahead of schedule." -- Greg McMaster, chief meteorologist, TV 7&4

How does daylight affect the color? Shorter days cause leaves to stop producing chlorophyll. The chlorophyll is what keeps the leaves green (remember all those science classes?), when the production stops the tress start to drop their leaves (or they "leave" on their own :)

We want the bright sunny days because that is what helps to produce the sugar which creates the brilliant reds and golds in oaks and maples. Cool nights help too.

Look to the interior of Leelanau County to change colors first. Then along the shorelines. It's that weather thing again and how it affects Leelanau County.

Suttons Bay in Leelanau County
Great Game Last Night
Final Score 35-0 against Frankfurt. Needless to say I'll let you find a sports sight to gather game details. But I sat in the stands during the entire game and must admit it was fun to cheer and do all those 'fan-type' activities.

The band was very good and their half-time performance was excellent. The Homecoming ceremony was smooth and it was fun to look around the stands and see the faces of all the proud parents of those children. The new bleacher seats were very comfortable, if not a little chilling while sitting but it was a football game, right? The hand-railings lent a terrific sense of safety for all of us who are just a bit squimish with heights.

The Chili Dinner beforehand was well attended and the food offered by some of the local restaurants and Hansens Foods was delicious.

And for all the childhood friends and teammates of Mr. Pline, let it be "known" that he caught the ball and is now in the game. He had to reach ahead of a former Rugby player from London to have it in hand, but he did it. He's in the game now! :)

Can you believe the summer has come and gone already? And the Labor Day weekend just finished? What a fun weekend for Suttons Bay. Plenty of shopping, reading, a wonderful Talent Show 'masterminded' by Donna Herman and Jackie Morrison from The Business Helper, immediately followed by the Suttons Bay Fireworks! What a beautiful display! Magnificent! The children loved them, and so did the adults. As usual, the finale always comes too quickly! The combined event drew an impressive and cheering crowd!

Interestingly the International Space Station flew overhead right before the fireworks began. Bright light in the sky heading east. The solar panels were still picking up light from the 'sun side' of the earth. And just as quickly the brightness diminished when it passed out of the range of the sun.

The streets are sparse! It is truly a sad day when the summer people that are so near and dear to us leave after a fun-filled summer! You could almost hear the trunks slamming shut all day in preparation for the drive home! We'll miss you!

But don't forget you can still stop our website, and we are always happy to have a package mailed directly to you!

Boats are still in the bay and marina, and I imagine we'll continue to hear summner sounds and noises as long as the weather continues to be pleasant. And what about shoes? It's been such a great summer for sandals. But pretty soon we'll need those socks as well!

What have you been reading lately? I've been absorbed in some earlier John Grisham titles, Michael Connelly, Harlan Coben, Anne Perry, two Nelson DeMille books (had never read him even though I enjoyed one of his movies), plus Strawberry Moon, a surprisingly satisfying Leelanau County-based mystery. And Chris Zimmerman's book, The Secret-Keeper continues to delight me. His Michigan-based novels have great plot twists and unexpected endings! I devoured all of them in a summer-induced reading feast! I was so occupied with the move and building shelves and putting up the books, and keeping up with web sites and blogs that I had neglected that pleasure for a few months. Feels good to have my hands back on those open covers again, instead of the spines as I put even more still, on shelves (can a bookseller ever truly be happy?)

Remember to look for our new location. We've positioned signs under the Roman Wheel sign, and on all sides of the building plus there are two red signs floating on the corner of the short white brick wall so it'll be easier for you to find us. Turn at the gas station and head towards the water. We're at the bottom of the hill on the left. We're as close to the water as you can get without being on a boat! That's why I took the picture above so you would have an overall view of the location.

For fall we're still going to shoot for daily hours of 11 - 5, and Saturdays are still up in the air for any regular hours (isn't that horrible?). We'll see.

The Mystery section has been organized and the Fiction section is done. But, all shelves have books on them and throughout the remaining fall months the emphasis will continue to be on getting sections organized in the manner in which you have come to expect from Known Books! We'll all just share in the adventure! But right now it is truly a book-browser's paradise!

So, continuing along the Deal or No Deal theme, there are still plenty of great books left in play - and yes, we can certainly use the money!

If you can't stop by personally, please search our inventory. Your best bet is to search most of the data from the title field. When I uploaded the file I didn't separate the data as I should have. I figured rather than spend countless hours on that I would rather use my new Skil Cordless Driver and put a few more shelves together! I'd also like to remind you that if we don't have what you're looking for online, and if you choose to buy from Amazon, please begin your search here, from the Known Books website, by entering the book you are looking for in the Amazon search box on this page in the upper right corner. The reason I ask is because we joined their Associate Program and when you order from them, and if you start here, we receive a referral fee. And that fee is one more amount which helps to keep the store open and available for you. And to all of you who have been entering the Amazon website from Known Books I truly appreciate that you do. Your doing so has helped tremendously.

Also, I've created a page with photos if you want to see the progress and other pictures of Known Books!
We offer both new and used books in general categories. Because we are located in a small resort community we select our inventory to serve our local market, and to have available titles which might also appeal to the thousands of tourists visiting our area throughout the year. We don't specialize because we realized that a broad range of subjects increases the ability to match the right book with the right person (which also increases cash flow!). Perhaps there is a book waiting for you too!

So, stop by often, and search our entire inventory via this website where all our books are listed (give or take a few based on daily sales activity). In addition to our own website, www.known.com (or www.knownbooks.com), our books are listed on Amazon.com Marketplace and zShops and with biblio.com.

All books are subject to prior sale.

Suttons Bay Today
Finally a Fifty Degree Sunny Day in Suttons Bay . . .

January 12th, 2006 -

Couldn't resist getting out and walking around and taking a few pictures of the former rail bed for Dan Mejak! He's in the process of rebuilding a train layout based on Suttons Bay and the Leelanau Peninsula. If you've got any information which might be of use to him to complete his project let me know at books@known.com if you can.

Suttons Bay Today
"Scene" Around Known Books . . .

January 10th, 2006 - Author Jerry Dennis and renowned artist and illustator Glenn Wolff!

A pleasant surprise indeed! Jerry and Glenn stopped in after doing a presentation to a crowd of 60 attendees at a function sponsored by the Inland Seas Education Association. The topic for the talk was based upon Jerry's most recent, and I might add, very bestselling, work "The Living Great Lakes."

Also discussed and presented were details from "It's Raining Frogs and Fishes" which was written by Jerry Dennis and lavishly illustrated by Glenn Wolff. Known Books is lucky enough to have a limited supply of First Edition hardcover copies (long out of print) of "It's Raining Frogs and Fishes" of which all copies have been signed by both Jerry Dennis and Glenn Wolff.

Suttons Bay is lucky enough to have a delightful full-bulding mural painted by Glenn Wolff. It is on the bay side of the BP Oil gas station building which faces the Inland Seas Education Association building. Access it down the alley entrance to Boone's Prime Time. (This alley also used to be the rail bed when the train ran through town!)

Suttons Bay Today - December 24th, 2005
Not a Creature Was Stirring … except maybe for Santa Claus once we cut him loose to be on his way!

What a fun day, many last minute shoppers, some harried, some rather calm, others just stopping in to say hello, smiles all the way around –

Merry Christmas and many thanks for a fun season!

The Bookseller!

Santa Comes to Suttons Bay
Sunday December 4, 2005
Lots of Christmas activity and Holiday happenings. The sirens roared, traffice stopped and Santa was delivered to The Silvertree Deli promptly at 3:30 on Sunday.
Santa chose a shiny new fire engine rather than bring the sleigh with all the reindeer because of the traffic. He said later that he felt it better for the other drivers to not come down from the sky with the sleigh because it does make the other drivers a little jealous because they can't get their ride that high into the sky. What a considerate man!

The crowds began to arrive and the children were so patient in keeping their parents calm,

And then the magic began.
Santa listening to a list.

I will post more photos later today.
